Motherhood can be a joyous time for some women, but for others, feelings of sadness, isolation, frustration, rage, apathy, and guilt become overwhelming. In cases of postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, our Licensed Counselors and Licensed Psychologists help women to adjust to the role of mother so they be present and thrive, not just survive! For other women, simply having an ear to listen, a neutral and supportive voice, and a resource for effective stress management skills can make all the difference in the world! Some of the things we

can cover together

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Depression is a mood disorder that occurs after childbirth. It is not “just baby blues” and women who experience this may cry for no reason, have feelings of sadness and anxiety, experience sudden mood problems, have difficulty concentrating, and even see changes in eating and sleeping patterns. Postpartum Depression can be common, can last weeks or months, and seeking treatment is highly recommended.

Postpartum Anxiety

Women who experience Postpartum Anxiety (up to 15% of new moms) may have a sense of dread, impending doom, feelings of agitation, and sleep disturbances. This may cause persistent concern over the baby’s health, development, or safety as well as a fixation on whether you qualify as a “good parent”.

Postpartum PTSD

Postpartum Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is caused by real or perceived trauma during childbirth or postpartum. This can emanate from an unplanned c-section, forceps delivery, NICU visit, prolapsed cord, or lack of overall support and empathy from relatives, friends, or even the healthcare team. Women who experience complications or birth injuries such as preeclampsia, maternal hemorrhage, unplanned hysterectomy, grade 3 or 4 perineal tears, or cardiac issues are also at risk of PTSD.

Infant Loss

The loss of a child (whether in utero or after birth) is a life changing, traumatizing event. Women (and their families) can have feelings of depression, need effective coping skills, and often benefit from therapeutic tools for dealing with loss. That’s why our Counselors are here!

Return To Work

Whether it is the mother’s goal or not, many women return to work after having a baby. This can cause feelings of sadness over being away from baby for extended periods of time, stress over how to pay for childcare, concern over others providing childcare, and anxiety over how to pump during work hours. Our Counselors help to address these concerns and feelings, and walk you through how to adjust to the new “norm.”
